What Is It?
A charitable bequest is a provision in your will designating a charitable beneficiary to receive a gift from your estate, perhaps a set dollar amount or a percentage of your total estate.
You can help preserve Cornwall's beautiful natural heritage through the simple act of naming the Cornwall Conservation Trust in your will.
This is an easy way to accomplish a long-range charitable goal. Gifts to CCT's endowment will be put to use to benefit the town and for the permanent enjoyment of generations to come. Also, since bequests are only distributed after death, therefore it is often possible to make a larger gift than is feasible on an annual basis. In the past the town has been enriched by generous donors who structured their will to include charitable donations.
You can give a variety of assets to a charity through your will including real estate, securities, tangible personal property, and cash. A will may be one legal tool of many used to accomplish your goals and maximize tax savings. Careful planning with your financial advisor can help assure that your intentions are carried out. Cornwall Conservation Trust (CCT) encourages donors to seek financial and legal advice when considering planned giving options.
A provision for the CCT in your will can take the form of a:
"I devise and bequeath to Cornwall Conservation Trust, located in Cornwall, CT, the sum of $______ (or, ____% of my estate) to be used for its general charitable purposes."
Alternatively, you can designate a
"I devise and bequeath to Cornwall Conservation Trust, located in Cornwall, CT, all (or ___%) of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, whether real, personal or mixed, and whatever situate to be used for its general charitable purposes."
CCT's general policy is to devote funds received from planned gifts such as bequests, to its endowment which supports land conservation activities and acquisitions. Upon consultation it is also possible to arrange restricted bequests to meet the special interests of our donors. Please communicate with CCT at the time you are drafting your will to make sure that your wishes can be carried out. If you are considering a gift of land, it is particularly important to contact us.
