The Cornwall Conservation Trust, Inc. (CCT) is pleased to announce that on May 30, 2019 we purchased from the Matland Family 72 forested acres on the south slope of iconic Tarradiddle Mountain in West Cornwall. The Matland Forest has significant conservation value, offers protection of forest, wildlife habitat, and watershed for Mill Brook and the Housatonic River. The scenic beauty of this roadside property with its dense forest has now been conserved for the enjoyment of the community. When trails are developed this property will also provide outdoor recreation opportunities to the public.

The purchase was made possible thanks to a Connecticut State Open Space and Watershed Land Acquisition Grant, The Federal Highlands Act funding, a grant from the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation, and generous private donors.

The Matland Forest has varied terrain, views and interesting geological features. It lies within an extensive protected areas network with over 730 acres of conservation lands located within a mile of the property.

CCT is a local nonprofit organization accredited by the National Land Trust Accreditation Commission in recognition of meeting national quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever. Our mission is to conserve open space lands to enhance the natural capital in Cornwall and adjacent towns and to manage those lands to promote wildlife habitat, forest improvement, water quality, farming and public recreation.
